Week 3 - What Kind of Thrower Are You?
Here is where you will describe to everyone exactly what kind of thrower you are. In order to gauge this you can tell how you perceive yourself in the following areas.
First, give us an idea of your physical qualities such as gender, approximate age, physical conditioning, body type(if you dare) such as big boned, petite, girly man, etc.
Then tell us about the following style attributes: do you release with hyzer, flat or anhyzer, do you start low and end high or come straight across your chest, how fast is your armspeed, do you have a big runup, a little runup, or none at all, do you follow through or punch your shot, do you throw with everything you`ve got or do you back off and concentrate on control, do you use a pinch grip, a fan grip or a power grip.
The winner will get $75 worth of golf discs specifically tailored to their needs by our in-house professionals! Sponsored by Clearwater Disc Golf Store!
Winner will be announced March 14th, 2009.

Ive only been playing disc golf for almost a year now. Im a big fat guy in my late 30’s. Once Ive lined my self up, I try and pull straight across my chest while keeping the disc flat with a smooth release.
Big fat guy and run up really dont go together ha ha. I use a 4 step X-step on my drives, always using a 3 finger power grip when on the tee pad with a nice smooth follow through. I always visualize my drive and concentrate on my control.
On my longer approaches I tend to not throw hard enough, but the disc usually takes the line I wanted it to, just comes up short. The unfortunate part it normaly leaves me BIG putts (30′-50′) usually leading to lots of boogies. I lean towards using a fan grip with my mids but with the longer distances I will use a 3 finger power grip.
My putting style varies depending on the situation, but is mainly a stradle putt. Im pretty consistant at making my putts up to 25′. I use a fan grip when putting. Unfortunatley outside 30′ it looks more like a throw and leads to more double putts.
Thats what kind of thower I am.

Well to be honest If you take the arm strength I have and the fact I am an old ass dude i would say I have a competitive to a sally ass throw i can hold my own but often find myself near the bottom of the list never cashing but having fun. And most importantly never DFL

I am a male and only 15 years old. Also I am petite which sucks and it isnt my choice and I cant switch it but oh well. I throw all my discs differently depending on the shot needed. And I release with a follow through and pull straight across my chest. I have a medium run up I start at the back right corner of the teepad and end up at the front right corner of the teepad. And also I throw hard in tournaments which is when it counts and have a power grip when I drive and when I am throwing an approach shot.I am a good all around thrower I can throw almost all shots needed to play the game and play it well. I can throw shots such as Backhand,Forehand, rollers, thumer, tomahawks, and I am currently learning how to throw a grenade.

I am 32 years old. I am 6′5″ tall. I weigh bout 180 lbs. I like long walks in the park(if there are baskets everywhere)J/K. I am a sidearm driver. I use a sidearm grip(two fingers on the inside rim). I don’t have a long run up. I take about three steps and then release like a short stop throws to first. I usually fake pump about five times to get my muscle memory in tune. I follow through and sometimes too much as I have twisted my old ankles a few times. For RHBH shots, I take one step with the left foot and plant the right to throw. I throw across my chest and follow through. Usually a little hyzer so the disc flips up flat. I straddle putt. I am so tall, I can really get some momentum swinging my arm between my legs and releasing on the way up. I can throw a tommahawk and thumber, but don’t like to. I throw a mean forehand roller with a sidearm grip. I rarely use it due to the local courses not having many holes needing one. I guess I’m not your average thrower because it always seems like I approach shots different from the norm. I get the same results though.

Ha! When it comes to my throwing style, I’m definitely not bragging. I’m a big guy (6′5″, almost 300 lbs.), and when I played for the first time, I made an absolute fool of myself. I saw everyone else in the group throwing backhand, so I just figured that’s how it was done. I had no power, no distance, and felt totally emasculated by the end of the round. Eventually, one of the members of our group clued me in to the forehand drive, otherwise known as sidearm. I tried it, and although it wasn’t perfect, it was a dramatic increase in distance.
When I throw, I try to stay as low to the ground as possible. It seems to help me keep the disc anywhere between 5′-15′ off the ground, unless the shot calls for otherwise. I place my index finger along the inside of the inner rim and hold it in place with my thumb. I have no x-step; no run-up at all, really. Kind of what could be described as a little skip, if anything. When I release the disc, it’s usually flat. However, depending on the direction I need my disc to go, I’ll release it anhyzer or hyzer (hopefully). My follow through leaves a lot to be desired, but considering I manage without one, I won’t be making it a priority just yet. I’d like to say that I can really let loose, but I find that when I put all I can into it, I have absolutely no control over where my disc is headed. So, I try for as much distance as possible while still maintaining some semblance of control.
I’m making a serious effort to make throwing backhand a serious part of my arsenal. Currently, I only throw backhand if I’m within 100 feet. I’ve also done a lot of research on proper x-step and sidearm run-up technique, so I’m hoping I’ll be able to apply some of that info to me game. Regardless, I play to have fun. Even if my game gets worse, I doubt I’ll stop playing. It’s just way too fun…

I throw Backhand mostly.
I’m a Pro Master. 970 player rating as of today.

Wow… Allright here we go, I’m a 6 ft tall athletically built 29 year old man. I’ve been playing for about 10 years. I throw… well.. that all depends. I like to consider myself a control player. meaning to me that I have a good grasp on how to release hyzer, an-hyzer flip, flat, thumber and tomahawk. It all depends on the shot at hand. I’ve spent countless hours in the woods practicing how to roll a disc through a rabbit hole. or tomahawk over a pine tree.
I would have to say I’ve got a good x-step with a medium long run up. if the whoile is in the 400-500ft range I’m gunna take a few extra steps though. if it’s a short 100-200 ft shot I might just pivot at the end of the tee with no run up at all.
On my drives I have a reach back and pull across the chest approach, with a power grip snap fallow thru, I was messin around this summer and found that if I release my thumb a little earlier I can get more D. I dont know what to call that but it worked for me.
Mids are sorta a pop shot with a fallow thru (I think follow thru is a key part of the game) Althou the amount of armspeed, pop, and the angle of release will differ pending on the shot at hand.
Putting…. I suck at putting.. it’s kinda a granda-shot in Basket ball meets a hopeless fail. I’ve changed my style more time then dennis rodmans hair. It’s something I’ll be spending a lot of time on this season.
all in all I play to play
February 24th, 2009 at 11:15 am
20/M/ rather athletic build. I usually throw flat as much as possible unless there is some kind of obstruction in the way. I usually start the throw low and finish high, sometimes too high for any kind of decent throw. My arm speed is not that fast quite yet, still trying to play as much as possible. I would call my run-up medium, not too far and not too short. On drives I always use a power throw, since usually my friends are using my over stable discs to throw overheads.
Which brings me to my plea. I need these discs so that my friends won’t have to steal all of mine and we could actually have a serious round of disc golf, without trying to share discs all game.

25 years old, male, playing 1 year, RHBH, Body type - D1 Lacrosse player. Like most noobs I started off just caring about the big D but once I started throwing as far as anyone in new york and not winning I’ve begun to try and develop some touch. For big in a wide open space I’ll use a three finger grip and when I want more control I’ve been trying to put all five on the disc with them fanned out(this has begun to give me some kind of touch.) My run up is about three steps but I pull all of my power out of that slow steady run up.

im a male 23 years old im in good health and im average. when i go to drive i first find a path. after that i get my footing and take two slow steps on my second step i bend my knees and slowly bring my disc back to my side then i swing as hard and flat as i can when i release i snap my fingers off the disc and follow throw im not sure what kind of grip i have but if i had to say it would be a tight power grip

22 years old 6′3/222lbs Athletic build,RHBH. Ive played sports my hole life, and started playing in ‘04, picked up the game fast and got addicted after my first throw, a solid rope. My release naturally comes off heizer, upper stomach to chest on release. I favor the flippy discs, theres somthing about knowing what to do with the action its gonna make that came natural to me I have really developed my skill around it and have more confidence in it than manualy annying it, My heizer is solid and I always follow through and my mid range drives and approaches are very much followed through but more of a punch from the shorter 200-250 range. I punch all my putts , more like popping them I would say ( for spin) I dont use 100% power on drives, but somtimes have tendencies for it to surge over 100 resulting in bizarr routes and never seen trees smashed, usually when Im trying too hard to anni somthing flat and far. I like My putters beadless and the weather warm, haha

23 yrs 5′10 160, athletic and mainly RHBH. I am much more of a finesse golfer then most people meaning I don’t use full power a whole lot, I concentrate more on placement and consistency then throwing 400 feet. Most of the reason why is that my main courses I play are fully wooded on both sides with fairways generally 50-60 feet wide. I would much rather throw my buzz 200-250 feet on a rope then see my disc flip into the woods and hit a tree. Generally for putting outside of 30 feet I like to jump putt because I don’t put a lot of snap on my putts and this seems to be the strong suit in my game. Max distance is 350 with a wraith but that’s few and far between.
February 25th, 2009 at 11:06 pm
well, to start off, im a male aged 28. i am fat(lol) and i use a pretty big run up and a 360 spin if i want more distance. i usually release pretty flat because my discs always end left of where i release. i pull the disc back toward my left shoulder and lead with my core as i pull my right arm across the middle of my chest. i usually try and work more for technique rather than just getting to the hole. for putts, i keep my right foot forward and i swing the disc back toward me then straight up releasing with a wrist snap. youd have to see it. i realease around my waist but follow thru all the way up with my arm.

Well im 26 weight 220lbs and am 5′9 im broad and athleticly built. I have played baseball my whole life til last year I broke my ankle, foot and leg so I have to take a break from the sport now or atleast my wife told me I half to but to my throw style
I started out a tomahawker cause of the baseball background, I would just grip it tight and run up and rip it which would leave it like 300ft out but throught out the 5 months I have played now im converting to LHBH with a 4 step X step flat across the chest snapping the wrist down at release and im crushing the disc more freaquently now midrange is more standing directly on my side placing the disc on my right peck with a wide stance and snapping my wrist straight through and across my body
Putting I stradle the disc and putt straight between my legs bringing the disc straight up amd releasing flat anmd fluid to float it down and in the basket

i’m a 26 year old male in decent shape. 5′11″ 170lbs. i would say i have an athletic build. i am a RHBH dominant player. very rarely throw forehand, but it is a goal of mine this year to develop a strong forehand or a LHBH shot. as far as my release goes, it varies with what the throw in front of me demands. i am developing a love for the hyzerflip shot, but it seems when i am going for max d i want to come over the top and put the disc on a big anny line. on most approach shots i would release flat. but again, it depends on what the shot demands. i think i have great arm speed, but i don’t have great snap (i’m working on it though). my biggest fault is trying to throw too hard and griplocking. i do use a power grip for drives and a fan grip for upshots, and i have a compact run up. 2 steps then the hop step, straight reach back and pull through. right now i’m hitting 350-380 pretty easily and accurately when i don’t try to rip it too hard. i can hit 400 occasionally. i am hoping when i get my snap down i can break 450 and keep great control. i do have a big follow through. and i guess that’s it. i love this game. love it love it love it. greatest game ever. ever.

jason
26 years old
old baseball player
330+ lbs
athletic yet beer gut build.
power grip except for mids and putters those are fan gripped.
Big follow through.
run up.
most discs are thrown with hyzer
What kind of thrower am I ?
well thats rather hard to figure out.
Recently i have been getting my best distence and accuracy with my flick. Back hand I cant seem to control like i used too. Im pulling across my chest. mids and fairways drivers are fine but bigger discs like my wraiths and spirits im not getting the distance i used to. Is it because im have worked on my flick for long distance ? Back hand was around 350 but has dropped to around 300. flick can get 380 but generally around 350.

I an a noobie. (December 2008)
Backhand- I come way back straight accross my chest and then pull hard and try and snap really quick. I use the 3 fingers under for the grip.
Forehand- This is gonna be tough to describe. Okay, I am right handed here. Pinky and ring finger are tucked down, middle finger is straight out, and then index finger is curled to where my tip lines up with the first bend in my middle finger. Then of course my thumb on top. I come way back, even with my chest again and throw a basebll style sidearm throw that is flat. It works for me as I can throw my FLX Surge 300 FT and straight as can be with minimal fade!!!

After reading the instructions:
I am 6′1, 210 pounds withan athletic build. I am a 27 year old male.
I release flat and come straight accross my chest. I have a slower controlled armspeed at the beginning and then I finish fast. I have a big run-up and a good follow through, and yes I grip it and RIP IT with all I have in me! I use power groups and throw like:

I am a male discer who stands 6′1″ 200 punds large boned . I throw back hand and forehand I try to keep the disc flat as I can and throw about waist high. I feel that my speed is fast and I use a small x step when throwing back hand. On forehand shots I use maybe a two step and throw about waist high as well. On both shots I try to follow through as much as possible on every shot. I am using a power grip and a two finger pinch for forehands.

hey now,male,57 yrs young.throw RHBH & sidearm. No run up,bad knees.Perhaps one or two steps(semiXstep) and throw flat with a slight hyzer.Power grip when driving, fan grip for sidearm or two finger flick.Follow thru chest high, sidearm is around waist high after aiming disc toward basket, might dip low sometimes.Arm spead is that of a 57 yr old early object/target frisbee player throwing since the 60’s.Body type-no spring chicken, but certainly not a dead duck.

I am a male, 31 in pretty good shape. I am tall and thick boned, but not very strong. I have back problems so i learned to throw without a run up, I basically Step and fire. I have only been playing for 3 years so I am still learning and improving my techniques. I tend to throw with a bit of hzyer across my chest and follow through smoothly. I use a fan grip on most all throws. My throw is somewhat accurate, the more i play the better it gets. My rock and fire technique allows me to throw about 400′. When I started i could only throw 250′ on a good day. All that has really changed since starting is my Technique.
March 10th, 2009 at 9:45 am
I would consider myself as a technical power thrower. I am 26 y.o. 6 foot about 175 with very fast arm speed. Only been playing about 3 years now after converting from ultimate frisbee. On a typical drive in an open field I can throw upwards of 450′. I use a combination between a fan and power grip. I like to release flat with Z or champ plastic due to the wooded courses I play. I often like hugh hyzers, hyzer skips, or hyzer flips or thumbers depending on conditions and the hole I am playing. I try to consistantly throw about 3/4 power to keep controlled. My run-up is usually about a 3 or 4 step X-step. Technique varies depending on shot but mainly a straight pull across the chest with arm extension so as not to hit myself with the disc and always make sure I follow through. Because of this I often find myself jumping or running off the teepad after release. Most of my game is played with mid ranges as I usually throw midranges off the tee for anything under 350. I started straddle putting and jump putting in the past month.
March 10th, 2009 at 12:54 pm
My name is Cassidy and I’m a disc a phallic. Ops wrong thread. LOL. But anyway I am 24 years old and around 5′6″ at 165lbs. I guess you would say I’m on the pudgy side. lol. Due to previous complications with my arm I mainly throw thumbers until recently I learned how to throw forehand using my challenger putter. I can drive about 220′ with a thumber, and about 250′ throwing forehand. Not a big guy by any means.
As for the run up. It’s well there. Never really thought about how big it is or little. I maybe take 3 or 4 steps before I throw keeping the disc as vertical as possible. I am usually pretty accurate on where I will end up.
Well good luck everyone with the contest.
March 10th, 2009 at 2:02 pm
I’m 17 and 6 ft 4. I’m about 200lbs and I’m a soccer player.my rating is 955 and I throw mostly sidearm, I use a one finger grip a 3 side-step run up and release for distance with my hand around my knees and for accuracy i release waste height. I throw both my sidearm and backhand roughly 400ft give or take 50ft, but my sidearm is much much much more accurate. I tend to throw really overstable discs sidearm and really understable discs backhand. Soccer career is over so I’m looking forward to being dedicated to one sport so I can finally get good at disc golf.
March 12th, 2009 at 10:13 am
Well I’m 21 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches tall with about a 72 inch wingspan, I think you could say that I’m something like athleticly big boned. One thing I like to do before i go out and throw is I do a few reps (maybe 10 to 15) with a light or comfertable weight (about 15 to 20lbs for me) to just warm up my triceps, biceps and shoulders. I’m a righty, but I do both arms just to feel balanced. I dont know if anyone else does that, it’s just a personal preference. About 99 percent of the time I throw backhand, using forehand and thumber shots if I have to. I take about 4 steps in my approch, taking a minute to line up my disc infront of me, I slowly walk my approch instead of running up which allows me to plant my feet firmly and stay balanced. In my last step I point my front foot at the point of release. I bring my arm straight across my chest, controling my initial arm speed, and I give it a good punch at the elbow and wrist. I keep my body standing tall throughout the whole approch and release. I use a power grip that keeps all of my fingers bunched together right on the inside lip of the disc and my thumb stays close to the rim, pointing straight forward on the release. I usually release the disc flat, but it deepends on the hole. I throw around 400′ to 425′. Throughout the whole process I like to stay controled and balanced. Good luck to everyone in the upcoming 2009 season, throw big and have fun!
